Artist Adesina’s Rebirth Wine Bottle Series in a photo by Rod Savant

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is having a great day so far — I definitely am! I recently got to visit the house of one of my collectors, and LOOK — two of my “Rebirth” wine bottles from back in 2011!

It felt so good to see them displayed in a loving home setting, and to pick them up and remember all the time it took to paint them (30 hours just to paint the one with the eye – “New Sight Blooms”), not to mention how proud I felt to do all that work knowing 100% of the proceeds would benefit charity.

When I was first approached by Rawhouse Wine to paint these bottles, I was really excited, but honestly I was also overwhelmed, because I have a very detailed painting style, and I knew that painting six bottles, to the high standards I hold myself to, would be over 100 hours of work, and for free, since they were auctioned off for a children’s art & music charity.

But then I thought about when I was a child, and how badly I wanted to be an artist, but the NYC public school system was always cutting arts education, making it nearly impossible for me to get access to the training I needed. And I realized that I have to the power to help other little kids just like who I was all those years ago. So, I buckled down, joined team #nosleep lol, and I did it! And if I remember correctly, it was down to the wire and I was delivering the finished bottles something like the day before the auction, and up to the last minute, I still didn’t know if I’d be able to finish.

After the auction, I took two of the beautiful professional photos that Rod Savant took of the bottles, and sold them at an art show to benefit Artistic Dreams International, another children’s charity that I actually used to volunteer for, teaching drawing to underprivileged kids up in Harlem.

So you can imagine all the emotions I felt when I saw these two pieces again, still holding a place of honor in a home, so many years later. This is the legacy I wish to leave behind: Beautiful art & loving philanthropy, always.

What is the legacy you wish to leave behind? Perhaps there is something we can collaborate on, to help the community, and bring more beauty into the world? Feel free to leave a comment below, or message me here. I’d love to hear from you!

Love,

Adesina

I am so excited that my Charity Art Auction portrait, the sale of which benefitted the Sandy Hook / Newtown School Support Fund, has been completed and given to the donor!

I took much longer than I intended, as well as artistic license, because just doing a simple portrait did not seem like enough. Working closely with the donor, I asked her what her favorite things were, and cats came up very high on the list. Realizing she did not have one herself, I thought it would be nice to include one in her portrait. I then chose one of her most interesting features, her hair, and stylized its rendering, giving it a very illustrative quality, and much more dimension than if I had left it as a simple mass of black.

In the end the portrait came out much more finished and imaginative than either of us could have guessed, and I hope that the donor enjoys having it in her home, as much as I enjoyed drawing it.

Looking forward to portrait #2!

xoxo,

Adesina

I am really enjoying drawing these portraits for the Charity Art Auctions. I don’t get to draw very often anymore, except as preparation for paintings, so it’s refreshing to be able to take them to a level of finish well beyond sketching.

This kitty was not initially part of the portrait, but the person said they liked animals and that I was free to use my imagination, so I thought it would be charming to add this little girl to the piece.

Funny thing is, she doesn’t exist in real life – I made her up from my imagination and from parts of other cats – my own cat’s eyes for example, inspired the lovely green. …I’m still waiting on the photo from the latest auction winner; maybe I’ll get lucky and it will actually be a pet portrait!

I am having so much fun working on this portrait for one of my Art Auction winners. It is always a pleasure delineating the face of a lovely woman. But as I work, it gets me to thinking about all of the other wonderful women and girls in the world, and how, in honor of Women’s History Month, I’d like to help them with my next Charity Art Auction.

I have already narrowed it down to three of my favorites:
Women for Women (Helping women survivors of war)
Girls Scouts USA (Builds girls of courage, confidence, & character)
Equality Now (Ending gender violence & discrimination)

But I need YOU to help me make the final decision! Which charity should I pick? Please leave your choice in the comments below, OR vote on my facebook poll here»

The next auction starts next Tuesday, and I’m closing the polls on the charity this Friday afternoon at 1pm. I can’t wait to see who you all pick!

Rawhouse_Wine_flyer

In April of 2011 I was honored to be chosen as one of three artists to participate in a charity art auction sponsored by Rawhouse Wine in New York City.

The theme of the event was “Rebirth” and in keeping with that idea, I handpainted a series of six bottles, each representing a phase of rebirth that has a personal meaning for me.

On July 27th, 2011, “A Celebration of Art” was held at the Juliet Supperclub in NYC, where the bottles were sold at auction, to benefit youth arts education. And I am pleased to say that four of the six bottles were sold that night, and the last two were sold in the ensuing weeks.

EDIT 12/2012: A year later, two of the beautiful photos that Rod Savant took of the bottles, were chosen to be printed and sold at auction to benefit Artistic Dreams International, an arts education nonprofit for whom Adesina also teaches drawing to underprivileged children in NYC.

The two below prints are available for purchase; please contact me here to order.

Special thanks to Rod Savant for his amazing photography.

See more photos of the bottles as well as descriptions, here.
